Introduction: From Dialectical Materialism to Cybernetic Materialism For more than two centuries the history of civilisation has been interpreted through competing myths. Some traditions imagined history as the unfolding of divine providence. Others believed it was the inevitable triumph of liberty, progress, capitalism, socialism or democracy. Every civilisation has produced its own narrative explaining why the present order represents the culmination of history. Yet history itself continuously refutes every claim to permanence. Every empire eventually declines, every dominant ideology is replaced by another, every sacred language becomes obsolete, and every generation constructs new systems of belief that appear eternal until they themselves disappear.
