What if one of the oldest philosophical disputes in Western civilisation had already been decided—not by philosophers, but by machines? For centuries, the conflict between realism and nominalism remained one of the most abstract debates in philosophy, apparently confined to medieval monasteries, university lecture halls and specialist works on metaphysics. Yet beneath this seemingly technical controversy lay one of the most fundamental questions human beings can ask: do the concepts through which we understand the world correspond to objective realities, or are they merely names that we have invented to organise experience? Every scientific theory, every legal system, every political ideology, every religious doctrine and every act of communication depends upon how this question is answered. Whether we speak of justice, democracy, intelligence, humanity, freedom or truth, we inevitably assume either that these concepts possess an existence independent of language or that they are products of language itself. The debate over universals is therefore not an obsolete medieval curiosity but one of the hidden foundations of modern civilisation. As John Stuart Mill famously observed, there is nothing general except names, a statement that captures the central intuition of nominalism and simultaneously challenges nearly every philosophical tradition built upon eternal essences and objective categories.
The extraordinary irony is that nominalism appears to have become so successful that it has almost disappeared as an explicit philosophical doctrine. The assumptions that once distinguished nominalists from their opponents have quietly become embedded within modern science, computational linguistics, cognitive psychology, media theory and, above all, artificial intelligence. Large Language Models neither search for Platonic Forms nor uncover hidden essences concealed beneath language. They operate entirely through statistical relations among linguistic signs, recognising patterns between words without any appeal to universal entities existing independently of language. Their astonishing success raises an ancient question in an entirely new form. If machines can produce coherent reasoning simply by manipulating names and their relationships, what becomes of the belief that language reflects timeless realities existing beyond words? The rise of artificial intelligence has unexpectedly transformed one of philosophy's oldest metaphysical disputes into one of the defining intellectual problems of the twenty-first century. The age of AI is therefore also the age in which nominalism has become a practical technology rather than merely a philosophical hypothesis.
This article argues that the history of nominalism is, in many respects, the hidden history of modernity itself. From the medieval debates of Roscellinus and William of Ockham through the empiricism of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, the analytical philosophy of W. V. O. Quine and Nelson Goodman, the behavioural psychology of B. F. Skinner, the linguistic scepticism of the Dao De Jing, the philosophical reflections of Cormac McCarthy and the contemporary cognitive theories of Elan Barenholtz, the same revolutionary intuition repeatedly emerges. Language is not a transparent mirror of reality but a human technology of naming. Artificial intelligence has now provided the first large-scale empirical demonstration that language can generate meaning, coherence and even apparent intelligence without appealing to universal essences. In this sense, the digital age does not merely coincide with the triumph of nominalism; it reveals that nominalism has quietly become the operating system of contemporary civilisation.
Part I: From Medieval Universals to the Language of Machines
Few philosophical movements have experienced a stranger history than nominalism. Although usually introduced as a specialised medieval doctrine concerned with the Problem of Universals, it gradually evolved into one of the most influential intellectual revolutions in Western thought. At its heart lies an apparently simple question. Do concepts such as humanity, beauty, justice or intelligence exist independently of individual objects, or are they merely convenient labels invented by human beings? The classical realist tradition, beginning with Plato, answered that universals possess genuine existence. Physical objects were regarded as imperfect copies of eternal Forms inhabiting a higher metaphysical reality. Medieval scholastic philosophers incorporated this vision into Christian theology, arguing that universals existed within the mind of God before individual things came into being. Humanity existed before human beings, justice before just actions and truth before human understanding. Such assumptions provided powerful philosophical support for religious authority because they implied that institutions could legitimately claim access to objective realities transcending ordinary human experience. Against this vast intellectual tradition emerged the revolutionary challenge of nominalism. Roscellinus argued that universals were merely flatus vocis, breaths of the voice, while William of Ockham developed the methodological principle that later became known as Ockham's Razor, insisting that philosophy should not multiply invisible entities beyond necessity. If individual objects sufficiently explain experience, then invisible essences become philosophically redundant. Reality consists of concrete particulars, whereas universals belong to language rather than to the world itself.
The influence of this apparently modest proposal gradually spread far beyond medieval theology. During the scientific revolution, Thomas Hobbes and John Locke argued that nature produces only individual things while general concepts arise through acts of human classification. Language increasingly came to be understood as a practical invention rather than a reflection of eternal truth. The twentieth century extended this transformation through analytic philosophy. W. V. O. Quine challenged unnecessary ontological commitments, Rudolf Carnap treated many philosophical disputes as questions concerning linguistic frameworks, Nelson Goodman interpreted systems of classification as human constructions, Hartry Field defended mathematical fictionalism, Jody Azzouni argued that reference does not imply existence and Richard Rorty transformed truth itself into a historically contingent social practice. Simultaneously, B. F. Skinner removed invisible mental entities from psychology, reducing language to observable patterns of behaviour shaped by reinforcement. Across these diverse traditions the same principle repeatedly appears: language does not discover eternal categories but constructs practical systems through which human beings organise experience. What began as a theological dispute gradually became the philosophical foundation of modern science, linguistics, psychology and communication theory.
The digital revolution has now carried this historical development to its logical conclusion. Contemporary communication increasingly treats words not as stable containers of objective meaning but as temporary strategic instruments whose significance continually changes according to technological infrastructures, institutional interests and algorithmic systems. Concepts such as democracy, freedom, misinformation, justice and truth circulate less as permanent descriptions of reality than as flexible labels competing for influence within digital environments. My own work extends this nominalist tradition into the analysis of communication technologies through The Miscommunication Trilogy, The Planned Obsolescence of Language and The New Paradigm of Communication. Here language appears not as an eternal repository of meaning but as an evolving behavioural technology continuously reorganised by digital platforms, recommendation algorithms and artificial intelligence. Meanings are generated, exhausted and replaced because semantic instability itself has become economically valuable. The emergence of Large Language Models provides perhaps the strongest historical confirmation of this perspective. These systems know nothing beyond names and their statistical relations, yet they produce outputs that humans routinely interpret as meaningful thought. They neither consult Platonic Forms nor search for hidden essences. They demonstrate, on a planetary scale, that language functions through relationships among names. What medieval nominalists defended through metaphysical reasoning has now become the practical architecture of artificial intelligence itself.
Part II: The Collapse of Essentialism: Daoism, McCarthy and the End of Fixed Meaning
The victory of nominalism did not unfold exclusively within medieval Europe. Long before William of Ockham challenged scholastic realism, one of the most profound critiques of language had already appeared in ancient China. Although the Dao De Jing never discusses universals in the technical language of Western metaphysics, it develops a remarkably similar suspicion towards naming itself. Laozi's opening declaration that "The Dao that can be spoken is not the eternal Dao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name" immediately separates language from reality. Names are not the things themselves but provisional human constructions imposed upon an infinitely more complex world. Before names there exists only the nameless, an undivided flow from which all distinctions emerge. The moment language appears, reality is fragmented into separate objects, categories and oppositions. A tree becomes a tree only because language isolates it from the soil, the atmosphere, sunlight and countless ecological relationships that together constitute its existence. The Dao De Jing therefore anticipates one of nominalism's central insights: language does not simply describe reality but actively produces the conceptual world within which reality is experienced. The famous passage from Chapter Two reinforces this conclusion. Beauty exists only because ugliness has been named; goodness exists only because evil has been created through comparison. Human beings imagine these oppositions to be natural, while in reality they emerge through acts of linguistic classification. Unlike Western nominalism, however, Daoism does not conclude that only concrete particulars exist. It instead points beyond language towards the Dao itself, an ineffable unity that forever escapes conceptual representation. Western nominalism seeks conceptual economy by removing unnecessary abstractions, whereas Daoism seeks liberation from conceptual thought altogether. Nevertheless, both traditions converge upon the same revolutionary discovery: words possess no eternal meanings, and reality continually exceeds every system of names that human beings impose upon it.
The twentieth century produced another unexpected ally of nominalism through the writings of Cormac McCarthy. In his philosophical essay The Kekulé Problem, McCarthy approaches language not as a literary device but as one of the deepest mysteries of human evolution. His central question appears deceptively simple. Why does the unconscious communicate through images rather than through language? The famous dream of August Kekulé, in which the image of a serpent biting its own tail revealed the ring structure of benzene, becomes for McCarthy evidence that the unconscious possesses an older and more fundamental form of intelligence than verbal consciousness itself. Images, metaphors and symbols belong to an ancient biological cognition that long predates language. Words, by contrast, are evolutionary newcomers. McCarthy therefore reaches one of the most uncompromising nominalist conclusions in contemporary philosophy. Language is an invention. It is not a biological necessity or a cosmic principle but an artificial technology created by human beings. Rather than revealing reality, language overlays an originally wordless world with systems of labels that simplify and often distort experience. The unconscious continues to distrust these labels because they inevitably reduce the overwhelming richness of reality into manageable conceptual categories. Here McCarthy echoes the medieval nominalists while extending their insights into evolutionary psychology. The unconscious communicates through images because images remain closer to lived experience than words ever can. Language is not the foundation of thought but one of its latest technological inventions.
These insights resonate closely with my own work on communication. Throughout The Miscommunication Trilogy, The Conspiracy of Speech and the theory of the Planned Obsolescence of Language, I argue that words should not be understood as stable containers of meaning but as strategic instruments whose significance changes according to political interests, technological infrastructures and communicative environments. In contemporary digital culture, concepts such as democracy, freedom, truth, misinformation, justice or hate speech are constantly rewritten by institutions, governments, corporations and algorithmic systems competing to influence perception. Language has become an adaptive behavioural technology rather than a transparent representation of reality. Digital platforms continuously manufacture, optimise and discard meanings because semantic instability itself generates attention, emotional engagement and economic value. This process represents the completion of nominalism's historical trajectory. Once language is recognised as an artificial technology rather than a mirror of eternal essences, it becomes programmable. Artificial intelligence simply extends this logic by generating entirely new linguistic environments whose meanings evolve statistically instead of metaphysically. The world imagined by medieval realism—a universe structured by permanent essences and objective categories—has quietly dissolved into an ecology of continuously shifting names. The age of artificial intelligence therefore marks not merely a technological revolution but the culmination of one of philosophy's oldest intellectual transformations.
Part III: Large Language Models, the Return of Reality and the Future of Nominalism
If medieval nominalists could somehow observe the twenty-first century, they would probably regard artificial intelligence as the greatest confirmation of their philosophical revolution. Large Language Models have accomplished something that generations of philosophers could only imagine. They produce coherent arguments, solve complex problems, write literature, translate languages and engage in sophisticated conversations without ever appealing to Platonic Forms, universal essences or objective concepts existing beyond language itself. Their operation is radically simple. Every response emerges from statistical relationships among linguistic tokens organised within enormous mathematical spaces. Words derive their significance not because they correspond to eternal realities but because they occupy positions within immense networks of other words. This observation has enormous philosophical consequences. Throughout most of Western history, language was assumed to function as a bridge connecting human thought with objective reality. Realists believed that concepts reflected hidden structures already embedded within nature. Large Language Models quietly overturn this assumption. They demonstrate that language can generate meaning, coherence and even apparently intelligent reasoning while operating entirely within a self-organising symbolic system. They are, in the deepest philosophical sense, mirrors of names rather than mirrors of reality. Their extraordinary success provides perhaps the strongest practical argument ever produced in favour of nominalism. What William of Ockham defended through metaphysical reasoning and what later philosophers such as Quine, Goodman and Field developed through philosophical analysis has now become the operational architecture of contemporary artificial intelligence.
The implications become even more striking when viewed through the work of the cognitive scientist Elan Barenholtz. His interpretation of Large Language Models radically challenges one of the oldest assumptions about meaning itself. According to Barenholtz, there is no hidden semantic content stored inside words waiting to be extracted by intelligent minds. Language behaves as an autonomous mathematical system whose apparent meanings emerge entirely from relationships among symbols. Every word acquires significance through its statistical position within an immense linguistic network rather than through correspondence with independently existing essences. Even the categories through which human beings organise the world become products of language rather than discoveries of nature. Rivers, mountains, colours, species and emotions all appear sharply bounded only because language imposes conceptual divisions upon an otherwise continuous reality. Barenholtz goes even further by questioning the widespread criticism that artificial intelligence lacks genuine understanding because it is "ungrounded." Instead, he proposes that human language itself operates through similar predictive mechanisms. Human beings become biological language models running on organic wetware, while artificial intelligence performs comparable operations on silicon hardware. The difference lies in physical substrate rather than philosophical principle. This represents perhaps the most radical form of nominalism yet formulated. Language no longer exists to reveal reality but to reproduce its own symbolic organisation. Large Language Models therefore expose not merely how machines work but how human linguistic thought itself has always functioned.
Yet the triumph of nominalism reveals an extraordinary paradox. Precisely because artificial intelligence functions through statistical names rather than eternal essences, humanity has begun searching once again for objective reality. The more synthetic language becomes, the greater the demand for stable truth. Deepfakes, algorithmic propaganda, synthetic media, AI hallucinations and automated misinformation have created an environment in which appeals to objective reality acquire renewed political and ethical urgency. Engineers attempting to solve the AI alignment problem quickly discover that systems cannot simply optimise arbitrary linguistic labels. Concepts such as fairness, responsibility, justice, harm and human dignity increasingly function as practical necessities rather than optional philosophical positions. Whether or not such concepts possess metaphysical existence, civilisation behaves as though they must. The twenty-first century therefore witnesses an unexpected reversal. Artificial intelligence has demonstrated that nominalism is sufficient for producing language and reasoning, while human societies simultaneously rediscover the practical necessity of realism. The future will therefore not belong exclusively to either tradition. Machines will almost certainly become increasingly nominalist, continuously generating flexible symbolic worlds organised through probability and prediction. Human beings, however, may continue searching for truths capable of resisting the endless fluidity of language. The greatest irony of the AI revolution is therefore also its deepest philosophical lesson. Machines have finally demonstrated that words require no eternal essences in order to function, yet human civilisation may still require the belief that some realities exist beyond language itself. The future of philosophy will not be determined by the complete victory of nominalism or the complete restoration of realism. Instead, it will be shaped by their permanent coexistence: increasingly nominalist machines operating within societies that continue, however imperfectly, to seek objective reality beyond the endless circulation of names.
Conclusion: Artificial Intelligence and the Final Victory of Nominalism
The history of nominalism has often been written as the history of a defeated philosophical minority. From Plato to medieval scholasticism, from Renaissance metaphysics to Enlightenment rationalism, realism appeared to dominate the intellectual landscape by insisting that universals, essences and abstract truths existed independently of human language. Nominalists were frequently portrayed as sceptics, reductionists or even philosophical outsiders questioning what generations of thinkers regarded as self-evident. Yet the twenty-first century has radically transformed this historical narrative. Artificial intelligence has unexpectedly shifted the battlefield from metaphysics to engineering. The ancient dispute concerning universals has become embedded within the computational architecture of modern civilisation. The remarkable irony is that while academic philosophy remains almost evenly divided between nominalism and realism, the technologies increasingly shaping everyday life operate almost entirely according to nominalist principles. Large Language Models neither require Platonic Forms nor consult eternal essences. They function successfully through statistical relationships among names, demonstrating that language can generate coherence, knowledge and apparently intelligent reasoning without appealing to objective metaphysical realities. What medieval nominalists defended through philosophical argument has become the practical foundation of artificial intelligence.
The consequences extend far beyond computer science. Artificial intelligence has quietly transformed our understanding of language itself. Words no longer appear as transparent windows onto reality but as dynamic elements within self-organising symbolic networks. Meanings emerge from relationships among linguistic signs rather than from correspondence with eternal concepts. Categories become flexible statistical constructions rather than objective divisions embedded within nature. My theory of the Planned Obsolescence of Language argues that this transformation extends throughout digital communication. Words are continuously generated, rewritten, optimised and discarded according to algorithmic efficiency, behavioural prediction and economic incentives. Language increasingly functions as an adaptive technological environment rather than as a stable representation of reality. In this sense, nominalism has ceased to be merely one philosophical position among others. It has become the operational logic of the digital age.
Yet this extraordinary triumph also reveals a profound contradiction. The more artificial intelligence demonstrates that language can function without eternal essences, the more human civilisation searches for objective truth. Deepfakes, synthetic media, algorithmic propaganda and AI-generated misinformation have intensified the demand for stable reality. Engineers attempting to align artificial intelligence with human values quickly discover that concepts such as justice, fairness, responsibility and human dignity cannot simply be treated as infinitely adjustable statistical labels. Whether or not these concepts possess metaphysical existence, societies increasingly depend upon acting as though they do. The future therefore belongs neither to complete nominalism nor to the restoration of classical realism. Instead, it will be characterised by a permanent philosophical duality. Machines will continue operating through statistical names, probabilities and predictive language, while human beings will continue searching for meanings that transcend the endless circulation of symbols.
Perhaps this is the ultimate lesson of the age of artificial intelligence. Machines have accomplished what centuries of philosophical debate could not. They have demonstrated that language does not require hidden essences in order to function. At precisely the moment when nominalism achieves its greatest technological victory, however, humanity rediscovers its enduring need for reality beyond language itself. The future of philosophy will therefore not be decided inside universities but within the evolving relationship between human consciousness and intelligent machines. Artificial intelligence has become the greatest experiment ever conducted on the nature of language, and its verdict is unmistakable. Large Language Models are not mirrors of reality. They are mirrors of names. Yet it remains an open question whether human civilisation can survive if it ultimately forgets the difference between the two.
